After many years as an award-winning actor and director in theatre, film and television, Ronan Paterson moved into the training of actors and directors, in various colleges, universities and conservatoires. He has been Head of Theatre Arts, Head of Drama or Head of Performing Arts at Newcastle College, University of Winchester, Queen Margaret’s University Edinburgh and laterly Teesside University, as well as being External Examiner (quality advisor) for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, Arden School Manchester and a number of other universities and colleges.

As a practitioner his work has been seen in ten European countries, on the stages of four national theatre companies in different countries, and he has facilitated everything from drama workshops with Young Offenders to masterclasses for producers and directors at China Central Television. As an academic he has been a frequent speaker at conferences all over the world, a visiting Professor at VSMU Bratislava, The Asian Academy of Film and Television, New Delhi and universities, film schools and conservatoires in Europe, Asia and Africa.

He has published articles and book chapters on Shakespeare and various subjects from theatre, film and television history in the UK, America, India, China, Italy, Poland, France and South Africa.

In 2016 he Co-ordinated the major Shakespeare 400th anniversary conference Kronborg Castle in Denmark, Shakespeare ‘s Elsinore.

Since retiring from Teesside University he has been working with the York Shakespeare Festival, and has mounted three exhibitions of Shakespeare in illustration, comics and Manga. For the last ten years he has been one of the judges of the international Graphic Shakespeare Competition.

When William Shakespeare began writing his plays the word rogue was still a comparatively recent addition to the English language.
