Mario Gutiérrez Rodríguez obtained her BA in History, his MA and PhD degrees in Archaeology from the University of Granada (Spain). After a postdoctoral stay at the University of Leicester (UK), he is currently a Juan de la Cierva Fellow at the University Institute for Research in Iberian Archaeology at the University of Jaén.
His research interests include microstratigraphy, site formation processes, and the application of geoarchaeological techniques of analysis to the archaeological record, among which soil micromorphology stands out. He applies such techniques to a great diversity of archaeological sites of south Iberia and north Africa, ranging chronologically from Protohistory to Late Antiquity.

He has published several papers in international peer-reviewed journals, like Geoarchaeology, Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences, and Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports, among others.
